Spring
Camporee Scouts at the February Roundtable told
us it is important to hold a spring camping event to give those new Scouts
who have recently crossed over from Packs to Troops their initial camping
experience as Boy Scouts. These Scouts, who are the leaders of their troops,
know what attracts boys to their units and what will engage these new Scouts
to keep them active in the program. The Boy Scout Spring Camporee will
take place on May 9 – 10 at the Swift River Sportsmen’s Club
The theme will be rockets and we expect to hold a patch contest, with designs
to be judged and a winning design selected by the participants at the event.

Welcome
to Our New Post Road District Executive Welcome to Tim Steffen, our Post Road
unit serving District Executive. Have some o you thought perhaps you
recognized him right off? Or did he seem to recognize you and your family
before you were formally introduced? All with good reason – Tim has actually
come home to Post Road District as a Scouting adult after spending his youth
as a Boy Scout in Troop 359 chartered to St. Cecelia Church in Wilbraham.
Tim is a 2007 graduate of UMass Amherst and was an active Scouter while a
student there. We are thrilled to have Tim as the Post Road District Executive,
and are very pleased with how quickly he has gotten to work helping us to
provide the best Scout program possible to our youth and their families.
District Award of Merit Recipients Recognized
Congratulations to Robert Perkins and AnneMarie Oldread, 2008 recipients
of the District Award of Merit. Both have been active at Pack and Troop levels
with their sons, are Wood Badge trained, and have chaired successful district
events. Bob is currently Scoutmaster of Troop 275 and is also Charter Organization
Representative for Pack 272. Bob is an active member of the Council
Training staff, assists at many district events, and has chaired successful
District and Council Camporees. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster for the
Council Jamboree Troop in 2005. AnneMarie has been active as Den and Webelos
Leader in Packs 160 and 164 and is currently active in Troop 161. She has
chaired District Yukon Derbies and has assisted at numerous District Pinewood
Derbies. AnneMarie is currently Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner where she
leads lively training sessions for Post Road leaders. Bob and AnneMari
were recognized for their dedicated service to Scouting at the Council Recognition
Banquet on February 9.
Silver Beaver Couple Congratulations
to Peter and Elizabeth (Ellie) Matrow who were honored as Silver Beaver recipients
at the February 9th Council Recognition Banquet. Although a number of PVC
Scouting couples have been recognized as Silver Beavers, this is the first
time a Pioneer Valley Council couple have received the honor in the same
year. Ellie has been a leader in Pack, Troop, and Crew 168 chartered at First
Church in Monson. She has been a volunteer staff at numerou sessions
of Cub Scout camp and serves as Cub Resident Camp Director. Ellie is Assistant
District Commissioner, serving the eastern part of Post Road District. Peter
has been called the “reluctant” Scouter since he was slow to sign on as a
member even though he was an ardent Scout supporter. Peter finally accepted
a position on the District Committee when he was convinced to chair the district
Bowl-w-thon. Since then Peter has been involved at the troop and crew levels
and currently chairs the Counci Training Committee. Peter and Ellie
are both Wood Badge trained and have attended the Philmont Training Center;
both have been faculty members at the College of Commissioner Science. Ellie
and Peter are educators who are active in their teachers’ unions. They are
members of the Monson Summerfest Committee and active in their church as
Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors. Peter and Ellie are the proud parents
of Eagle Scout son, Robert. Post Road District congratulates Tom Condon
of Knox Trail District who was awarded the Silver Beaver on February 9th
in recognition of his years of service to scouting and his community.
Successful
Yukon and Klondike Derbies the Highlight in January
Thank you to Holland Jenkins and Troop 161 for a fantastic Klondike Derby:
National Treasure held at Moses Scout Reservation on Saturday January 26.
We saw some new events and twists on some of the familiar ones as well. Lunch
was much appreciated and the sled race at the end of the day was a challenge
for sure. And thank you to Paul Zielinski for overseeing the Post Road Yukon
Derby held in Palmer on Saturday 19. With the help of youth and adult volunteers
and the enthusiastic participation of Cubs and their families, we enjoyed
a fun filled afternoon in the outdoors. Both events were well-attended and
fun for all. We especially appreciated that the organizers of these winter
activities were able to arrange great weather and near-perfect winter conditions
for each day.
Friends
of Scouting Since January District Chairman Mike
DuBois has been busy traveling throughout the Post Road District speaking
at unit events to offer th opportunity to support the Scouting Program
in the Pioneer Valley Council through FOS Family Campaign. We hope to garner
100% participation from every unit by getting a response from each member
family and contributions from all those who wish to give. Every dollar contributed
helps PVC provide a quality program to our youth, and we hope that families
will consider a pledge of a monthly contribution through- out the year. Unit
participation in the FOS Campaign is part of the Centennial Award commitment
and also is one of the criteria of the Wham-Bam-Advancement-Slam. Has your
unit made a date for Mike to make his presentation? If not please contact
him at mdubois@massmutual.com
to schedule your FOS promotion this spring.
Thank
You to PVC Registrar The entire Commissioner Staff
sends a huge “Thank you” to Registrar Mary Jane Klaus for her tremendous
work in getting the Post Road Charters entered and printed (with help from
Brittany) in time for the March Roundtable. As Charters and Rosters
are distributed to Unit Leaders, Commissioners are offering to do formal presentations
at Charter Organization events. This is the time to recognize and thank the
Charter Organization for sponsoring our Scouting Units
